Opportunities for Community Service

Helping Hands Food Bank
Helping Hands Food Bank is a service of the First Methodist Church of Tupelo. UUC Tupelo is collecting items for donation to the food bank. In response to a need at Helping Hands, we are collecting personal care items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo), diabetic items (low-sugar foods, sugar substitutes, etc.), quick-prep. food items for kids (cereals, frozen popsicles), disposable diapers (#3 size), "pull-ups". As always, any canned foods, pasta, rice, beans, etc., are also needed.  Members of our Congregation volunteer their labor one Saturday in four to help interview applicants, pack grocery donation boxes and bags which are distributed to qualified needy individuals and families.
We work with "Team 4" and serve every 4th Saturday.
Dates for 2009 are:  Jun - 27, Jul - 25, Aug - 22, Sep - 19, Oct - 17, Nov - 14, Dec - 12.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

JUNE IS TORTURE AWARENESS MONTH
In 2008, in cooperation with the National Religious Campaign Against Torture Our Congregation organized a public awareness rally in downtown Tupelo at the Federal Building at Church Street and West Main, followed by a march down Main Street to the Park at Fair Park. We carried banners proclaiming
Torture is a Moral Issue” and “Torture is Wrong”
and handed out information brochures.
In 2009, the emphasis is on convincing our Legislators and the Obama Administration that we need a formal, but independent, Committee of Investigation to document our past actions and recommend legislation to prevent such actions forever.
